Microsoft Small Business Server 2000/2003 TechBIO of R. Shane Mundee

Experience - 2005

  • Worked as a Senior Systems Engineer for a Dallas, Texas Microsoft Partner/Value Added Reseller.  I provided support for Microsoft SBS 2000/2003 servers as well as the company's internal SBS 2003 server.
    Major challenges were:
    • Troubleshot an SBS 2003 intermittant lockup problem, which turned out to be an operating system/USB device driver issue with external USB hard disk drives which were being used as an economical server data backup device using a scheduled perl backup script.
    • Performed administrative "Monthly Services" on contracted client's SBS servers.  Defragmented server hard drives and Microsoft Exchange Information Store databases, researched error messages in the logs and performed necessary corrections to ensure proper server functioning; Air dusted servers and visually inspected for proper operation of fans and drives (in RAID arrays).
    • Performed a bit of detective work by configuring performance logs to show evidence that a SBS server's SCSI hard disk subsystem was causing a bottlekneck to the overall operation of the server and that it would probably not be a good idea to saddle the server with Microsoft Exchange duty.
    • Administered Symantec Norton Corporate Anti-Virus and Trend Micro AntiVirus software, both the OfficeScan client/server AV product as well as the Exchange-specific product.
    • Remotely troubleshot and assisted clients using SBS's Remote Web Workplace.
    • Remotely administered SBS servers using RDP protocol / Terminal Services Administrator licensing mode.
    • Troubleshot Exchange server mailbox information store corruption issue.
    • I configured remote reporting and analysis for each SBS server so that each day I received an e-mail containing the server's event logs along with SBS statistical information reflecting the status of the server.  This automated reporting allowed for proactive, rather than reactive administration and support.
