Subject : CWNE Application - Query

Inbox

Hi Shane,

I am current reviewing your CWNE application, and I have the following questions
I would like you to address concerning your projects. Your response to these
requests will be considered part of your application and will weigh upon the
outcome of the review process. Please take your time and respond carefully -
there's no need to rush. If you need copies of the paperwork you submitted as
part of your application, please let me know and I can forward them to you for
reference.

Project #1

Question #1:

Please explain why, as a CWNA (or higher) at the time, you chose to use
NetStumbler to do a site survey and security sweep in light of the fact that
there are many more professional and thorough tools on the market (like protocol
analyzers).

Question #2:

Please explain why Netstumbler, using an 802.11b (HR/DSSS) card, *may* or *may
not* find ERP access points in a rogue sweep.

Project #2

This writeup does not qualify as a project. Please submit another project that
describes an implementation, troubleshooting, or network design project where
you were involved. You can still use teaching as your project, but you have to
be more specific about a particular class, problems you encountered and
repaired, wireless hardware/software used, etc. Just talking about what your
training center does isn?t enough to qualify. Keep in mind that you are
applying for CWNE status ? more detail is better.

Project #3

Question #1:

It seems that you are very familiar with beginner-level tools such as
Netstumbler, but you never mentioned use of protocol analyzers, WIPS, WLAN
controllers, wireless network design, RADIUS, etc. Hunting down a rogue device,
locating it, getting rid of it, and then advising the customer on an appropriate
course of action regarding policy is good ? it shows me that you are a very
capable CWNA. However, I would like to see a project involving something more
substantial and in-depth. Please replace this project with something along the
lines of those topics listed above.

In-General

Rather than deny your application and make you wait 6 months to reapply, after
reading through your entire application, I would rather give you the opportunity
to answer questions on Project #1 and replace Projects 2 & 3. I will hold your
application pending the submittal of your answers and replacement projects.
Please submit them directly to me via email in .doc, .pdf, or .rtf format.

Thanks,

Devin Akin
